Sr. Network Engineer - 100% remote

Sr. Network Engineer

6 months contract (to hire possibility)

Long term need

100% remote in U.S. (Eastern or Central time zone working hours)


SMART IT People has a 6 months contract opportunity (with high probability of extension/conversion to perm) for a Sr. Network Engineer with our client in the Data Center industry.  This role is responsible for designing and building our client's network.  Looking for a SME in areas such as network routing, switching, firewall, network automation, and virtual environments. 


Must have skills:

  • 8+ years experience of hands-on network engineering and production support working in IT Operations
  • 6+ years network security and best practices
  • Production support of major firewall platforms Cisco ASA and Fortinet Fortigate (migration experience a plus)
  • Must have router/switch experience with Cisco, Juniper and Arista (at least 2 of the 3)
  • Service-provider BGP (within a large scale enterprise-level data center)
  • Firewall experience with Cisco ASA and Fortinet (migration experience a pus)
  • Broadcom/VMware NSX Data Center
  • Coding for automation: Python (Ansible, Git or Jinja are nice to have)
  • Experience using a ticketing system or project management work tracking, notation keeping, and internal communications 
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Expert level understanding of core networking technologies including:

                o  Routing protocols: BGP, OSPF and IS-IS

                o  Routing and switching infrastructure from Cisco, Juniper, Arista.

                o  Layer 2 technologies such as Spanning Tree, STP, RSTP, EVPN, VXLAN, MPLS

  • Experience with virtual environments, specifically NSX-T
  • Expert level network troubleshooting skills 
  • Experience writing design and implementation documents, Visio drawings, process documents, etc. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritize and organize effectively, work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work both independently and with others 
  • Ability to operate in a fast moving, team-oriented, collaborative environment with tight deadlines
  • Proficiency in using MS Office Suite and Windows-based computer applications


Preferred Experience 

  • Experience supporting large scale data center infrastructure environments.
  • Experience supporting the networking requirements for Multi-tenant environments.
  • 5+ years of support and design of load balancer implementations including:
    • Kemp
    • F5
    • A10
  • Experience and knowledge of network monitoring/management technologies (SNMP, Netflow, syslog, monitoring applications, etc.)
  • Good knowledge of DNS 
  • Experience with various operating systems including Windows and various flavors of LINUX
  • Advanced level industry certifications


Job Description:

  • Provide Quality internal customer service surrounding the Company Values.
  • Completes projects on time. Capable of breaking down large projects into logical components and implements them with attention to detail and required documentation.
  • Provides clear and accurate communications with internal customers regarding the status of their requests in a timely fashion. 
  • Develops documentation of environments to accurately reflect the as-built information of the solution design and includes details of network connections and IP/port assignments, firewall configurations, monitoring components, exceptions from default, and special customer requirements.
  • Will be considered to be SME for assigned projects and assist all other engineers on the team with questions regarding the environment, in order to ensure a smooth transition into EOC and/or Managed Service Operations.
  • Responsible for writing and reviewing MOP’s as a part of the change management process.
  • Provides operational support of the core network infrastructure as well as offer recommendations for improving overall network performance.
  • Provide technical assistance to other engineers/teams.
  • Participate in team stand-up meetings and provide accurate status of projects and next steps. Alert Network Manager and team lead to any obstacles or delays.
